Andhra Renamed Konaseema District After Ambedkar

The Andhra Pradesh government on Friday decided to rename Konaseema district as Dr B R Ambedkar Konaseema district.

The state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy approved the gazette notification issued on May 18 to change the name of the district.

Police have beefed up security in the entire district, especially at the district headquarters Amalapuram. Because on May 24, mob violence was witnessed against this move of the government.

Dozens of People, Including 25 Policemen, Were Injured in the Violence

Protesters opposing the proposal to rename the district torched the homes of Minister of State P. Vishwaroop and MLA P. Satish and also torched some police and private vehicles.

In view of the cabinet decision, the police have made elaborate security arrangements to prevent any protests. Additional forces were deployed in the town and other parts of the district to prevent any untoward incident.

Last Month, A Strict Vigil Was Being Kept on the Organizations That Organized the Mass Protests For the Violence

The state government had issued a notification on May 18 inviting objections and suggestions on the proposal to rename Konaseema district as Dr. Ambedkar Konseema district.

It sought suggestions and objections from people living within Konaseema. The 30-day period for sending objections and suggestions ended last week.

Konaseema district was carved out of East Godavari and made the headquarters of Amalapuram.

It was one of the 13 districts created on April 4, taking the total number of districts in the state to 26.
