Russia’s Andrey Rublev defeated Ricardas Berankis 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round of the tournament at the Hamburg European Open on Wednesday.
Second-seeded Rublev overtook the Lithuanian with his precise and powerful groundstrokes and boosted his pace of play at crucial moments. Defeated Berankis in a match that lasted 73 minutes.
Rublev now holds a 10-2 record in the ATP 500 clay-court event, having defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas to lift the trophy in his previous appearance in 2020, before reaching the final in 2019.
“I’m happy with my performance. Ricciards is a really tough player. He hits the ball really well and plays fast, so I saw the pace from the first game,” Rublev said.
He continued, “I am really happy that I was serving well today and I hit some great shots from the baseline. He came back in the second set, he played really well.”
With his 32nd Tour-level win of the year, the 24-year-old has improved to 3-0 in his ATP head-to-head series against Berankis and will next face Bastad champion Francisco Cerundolo.
