The Union Health Ministry on Friday notified amendments to the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Packaging and Labelling) Rules, 2008 to prescribe new warnings for all tobacco products. The amended rules will come into effect from December 1 and will be valid for a period of 12 months.
All tobacco products manufactured, imported or packaged on or after December 1, 2022 shall be accompanied by a warning saying ‘Tobacco causes painful death’.
Next year i.e. on or after December 1, 2023, tobacco products manufactured or imported or packaged will display a picture with a health warning. It will be written as a warning, ‘Tobacco users die at a young age.’
Any person directly or indirectly engaged in the manufacture, production, supply, import or distribution of cigarettes or any tobacco products shall ensure that all packets carry new health warnings.
The ministry said violation of the guidelines is a punishable offense with imprisonment or fine as prescribed in section 20 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertising and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003.
