According to the latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 24,000 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in the US as of Monday.
California has the highest number of confirmed cases so far with 4,656, followed by New York with 3,755 and Florida with 2,398, Xinhua news agency reported, citing CDC data.
In most cases of Monkeypox Infection, patients recover within two to four weeks. According to the World Health Organization, the disease has a mortality rate of around 3 percent to 6 percent.
According to the CDC, a person is at a higher risk of developing serious illness if infected.
US health officials have warned doctors against overusing the only drug available to treat monkeypox.
The US Food and Drug Administration warns that an antiviral drug called tecovirimat is highly vulnerable to resistance. Even a small mutation in the virus can leave the drug ineffective.
