New Zealand out of Thomas Cup After Increasing Cases of Covid Among Players

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Wednesday confirmed that the New Zealand badminton team has withdrawn from the Thomas Cup Finals 2022 after several of its players tested positive for COVID-19.

The USA Badminton team will replace New Zealand in Group D in the prestigious tournament starting May 8 in Bangkok.

The BWF said in a statement, “Team New Zealand withdrew from the BWF Thomas Cup Finals 2022, as their team was unable to participate due to a large number of corona infections.

The world governing body also noted that no other Oceanian member federation was able to fulfill the continental position in New Zealand’s absence.

He said, “No other Oceanian member federation was able to fulfill the continental spot. Hong Kong, China and Spain were next on the basis of world rankings, but they also declined.

Team USA followed Japan, Malaysia and England.” confirmed their participation and will take their place in the Thomas Cup Group D.”

Notably, the Indian team has been placed in Group C of the Thomas Cup along with fourth-seeded Chinese Taipei, Germany and Canada.
