Tokyo Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra broke his own national record to win a silver medal in the javelin throw event at the 2022 Paavo Nurmi Games here.
The 24-year-old Chopra recorded a best throw of 89.30m on Tuesday, just behind Finland’s Oliver Helander, who won the gold with a personal best throw of 89.83m.
Grenada’s Anderson Peters, the reigning world champion and world leader of the 2022 season, won the bronze with a time of 86.60m.
This was Neeraj’s first competition in Finland after winning the historic gold medal at Tokyo 2020 in August last year.
Chopra continued, “Very good competition and I am very happy to have my personal best and national record. Oliver (Helander) had great technique. I will play the next match in Cuortaine after four days.”
London 2012 Olympic gold medalist Keshorn Walcott of Trinidad and Tobago finished fourth in the 10-man field with 84.02m, while Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Jacob wadledge of the Czech Republic finished sixth with 83.91m.
