Indian shuttler PV Sindhu clinched her maiden singles gold medal by defeating Canada’s Michelle Lee 21-15, 21-13 on the last day of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 on Monday.
Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist who had failed in her last two attempts, finally overtook the world number 13 with a stellar performance after winning silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and bronze at the 2014 Glasgow Games.
World number 7 Sindhu maintained the lead in the title bout, given that her rival was a former singles gold medalist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Sindhu had won eight out of 10 matches over Canada before Monday’s match. Actually Sindhu had defeated Lee twice this year.
The opening game saw a fierce contest with a score level of 4-4. Using her stature and smashes, Sindhu took a 14-8 lead and eventually won the opening game 21-15.
Sindhu took an 11-6 lead in the middle of the game. Lee’s struggle continued thereafter, with Sindhu putting pressure on him 19-13. After this the Indian shuttler took the championship point and gold.
