Oscars 2026: Complete Winners List — Sinners, One Battle After Another, and Every Historic Moment

The 98th Academy Awards saw One Battle After Another win Best Picture with 6 Oscars, while Sinners made history with 4 wins including Michael B. Jordan's historic Best Actor.

The 98th Academy Awards: A Night of Historic Firsts

The 98th Academy Awards ceremony, held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday night, delivered one of the most memorable Oscars in recent history. Hosted by Conan O'Brien — who joked he was "the last human host" before AI takes over — the evening saw groundbreaking wins, emotional speeches, and a fierce battle between two films that defined the night: One Battle After Another and Sinners.

One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, led the night with 6 wins from 13 nominations. Meanwhile, Ryan Coogler's Sinners — the most-nominated film in Academy history with 16 nominations — took home 4 Oscars, including some of the evening's most historic prizes.

Best Picture: One Battle After Another

One Battle After Another claimed the night's biggest prize — Best Picture. Producers Adam Somner, Sara Murphy, and Paul Thomas Anderson collected their statuettes, with Anderson becoming a three-time Oscar winner on a single night.

Best Actor: Michael B. Jordan — Sinners

Michael B. Jordan received a thunderous standing ovation as he won Best Actor for his dual performance as twins Smoke and Stack in Sinners. This was historic in multiple ways:

  • He became just the sixth Black man to win Best Actor in Oscar history
  • He is the first actor ever to win an Oscar for playing two roles in the same film
  • Sinners was shot on IMAX 65mm and Ultra Panavision — a technical marvel

In his emotional speech, Jordan began with "God is good" and acknowledged his family in the audience — his mother sitting beside him and his father who flew in from Ghana. He then named every Black performer who had previously won the award: Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith, honouring their legacy.

Best Actress: Jessie Buckley — Hamnet

Irish actress Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for her tear-jerking performance in Hamnet, becoming Ireland's first-ever Best Actress winner. Her performance as Agnes — wife of William Shakespeare — moved audiences and voters alike.

In a deeply personal speech, Buckley thanked "the incredible women" nominated alongside her and spoke lovingly about her eight-month-old baby girl. With Sunday also being Mother's Day in the UK, she dedicated her Oscar to "the beautiful chaos of a mother's heart."

Best Director: Paul Thomas Anderson — One Battle After Another

Paul Thomas Anderson finally claimed his first Oscar after decades of acclaimed filmmaking. The director of There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, and Boogie Nights won both Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for One Battle After Another, bringing his total haul to three Oscars in one night.

Best Supporting Actor: Sean Penn — One Battle After Another

Sean Penn added another Oscar to his collection, winning Best Supporting Actor for his role in One Battle After Another. This performance rounded out the film's dominance in the major categories.

Best Supporting Actress: Amy Madigan — Weapons

Amy Madigan won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Aunt Gladys in Weapons. Her character became a recurring reference throughout the ceremony, with host Conan O'Brien even dressing up as Aunt Gladys for the opening segment.

Best Original Screenplay: Ryan Coogler — Sinners

Ryan Coogler won his first Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Sinners. The Black Panther director's screenplay for the Depression-era horror film was widely praised for its originality and depth.

Historic First: Best Cinematography Goes to a Woman

One of the biggest moments of the night came when Autumn Durald Arkapaw won Best Cinematography for Sinners, becoming the first woman ever to win this award in Oscar history. Arkapaw, of Filipino and African American Creole descent, is also the first female cinematographer to shoot on IMAX 65mm and Ultra Panavision.

Best Animated Feature and First K-Pop Oscar: KPop Demon Hunters

The Netflix animated feature KPop Demon Hunters won Best Animated Feature and made history when its song "Golden" became the first K-pop song to win an Oscar. Singer EJAE, along with composers Mark Sonnenblick and South Korean hit factory The Black Label, made history as the first Korean artists to win Best Original Song.

Best International Feature: Sentimental Value (Norway)

Norway's Sentimental Value was named Best International Feature Film, adding to Scandinavia's strong presence at this year's awards.

Best Documentary Feature: Mr. Nobody Against Putin

Mr. Nobody Against Putin won Best Documentary Feature. The documentary filmmakers used their acceptance speech to deliver political statements, urging the world to "stop all of these wars now."

The Night's Biggest Takeaways

The 2026 Oscars will be remembered for breaking barriers. From the first woman winning Best Cinematography to the first K-pop song winning an Oscar, from the first casting achievement award to an actor winning for a dual role — this ceremony celebrated firsts. Sinners may not have won Best Picture, but with 16 nominations and four historic wins, it was the cultural story of the night.
