Around 23,000 Indian sailors in Gulf, 27 vessels near Strait of Hormuz — 'Govt in contact with them': Ministry

The Indian Shipping Ministry has confirmed that approximately 23,000 Indian sailors are currently operating in the Gulf region, with a significant presence near the Strait of Hormuz. Specifically, there are 24 Indian-flagged vessels in the Persian Gulf, which together are carrying 677 Indian seafarers. Additionally, three vessels in the Gulf of Oman are home to 76 seafarers. The Ministry has reassured families and stakeholders that they are maintaining communication with these sailors, ensuring their safety and well-being amidst rising geopolitical tensions in the area. The presence of Indian seafarers in these strategic waters underlines India's vital role in global maritime trade, particularly in a region known for its crucial shipping lanes. The government’s proactive measures reflect its commitment to safeguarding its citizens working abroad, especially in regions that are critical for energy transport and trade. As the situation evolves, the Ministry continues to monitor the safety of Indian nationals in the Gulf, emphasizing the importance of their contributions to the maritime industry and the economy.
