Barrier-free tolling runs into a Chinese security bump

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is encountering challenges in implementing its innovative multi-lane free-flow tolling system due to security concerns related to imported surveillance cameras. These cameras, primarily sourced from China, have raised alarms regarding potential data privacy risks and highway security. In response, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is considering a phased approach for the rollout of the tolling system. This interim strategy may involve the use of low-speed cameras while the government explores alternative solutions that could mitigate security vulnerabilities. The goal remains to modernize the toll collection process, ensuring efficiency and convenience for motorists without compromising safety and privacy.
