Boys face consequences under POCSO Act for consensual adolescent relationships, says Madras High Court

In a significant ruling, the Madras High Court has overturned a conviction under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, highlighting the challenges young boys face when involved in consensual relationships during adolescence. The court noted that many such cases arise due to undue parental pressure, leading to unjust legal repercussions for boys. Emphasizing the need for a more nuanced understanding of adolescent relationships, the court identified flaws in the evidence presented during the trial and called for reforms to ensure that the POCSO Act is not misused against young individuals. This ruling is pivotal as it aims to protect the rights of adolescents while ensuring that the law is applied fairly and justly, addressing the complexities of teenage relationships in contemporary society.
