FIR lodged against Srinagar MP, ex-mayor for 'circulating false content' after Khamenei's death in US-Israel attacks

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have initiated legal action against Member of Parliament Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar mayor Junaid Azim Mattu for allegedly disseminating misleading information on social media. The FIR, filed under relevant sections of the law, claims that their online activities could potentially disturb public order, particularly in light of recent tensions following the death of Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei amid conflicts involving the US and Israel. Authorities have expressed concern that the spread of false narratives could incite unrest in the region. This move underscores the government's ongoing efforts to monitor and regulate social media content, especially concerning sensitive geopolitical issues. Both Mehdi and Mattu have faced accusations of irresponsibly using their platforms, which could exacerbate existing tensions in Jammu and Kashmir, a region already marked by a complex socio-political landscape. The case highlights the delicate balance between freedom of expression and maintaining public order in a politically charged environment.
