For smooth medicine supply, CGHS centres to now have 3-month buffer

In a significant policy shift, the Indian government has introduced a three-month buffer stock system for medicines supplied through the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS). This initiative is set to benefit approximately 4.2 million beneficiaries by addressing frequent shortages of essential medications. The new strategy aims to enhance the overall quality control of medicine supplies by implementing a digital tracking system that will monitor inventory levels and ensure timely replenishment. Additionally, a demand-driven procurement model will be adopted, which is expected to streamline the supply chain and respond more effectively to the needs of CGHS beneficiaries. This move comes in light of ongoing challenges in the healthcare sector, where timely access to medicines is critical for maintaining public health. By establishing a buffer stock, the government hopes to mitigate supply disruptions and ensure that patients receive the medications they need without unnecessary delays.
