India remains world’s second-largest arms importer despite push for domestic defence production: SIPRI

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India has retained its position as the world's second-largest arms importer between 2021 and 2025, despite a modest reduction in its arms purchases. This trend highlights India's ongoing efforts to modernize its military capabilities amid persistent security challenges in the region. The decline in imports may reflect India's push for self-reliance in defense production, as outlined in the government's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative aimed at enhancing domestic manufacturing of defense equipment. Nevertheless, the country's strategic needs and geopolitical tensions with neighboring countries continue to drive its defense procurement strategies. SIPRI's report underscores the delicate balance India must maintain between fostering indigenous production and ensuring its defense readiness in an increasingly complex regional security environment.
