Instant redemption helps lure retail investors to liquid funds
In India, many retail investors traditionally keep their savings in low-interest bank accounts, earning only 2.5% to 3% annually. However, a notable trend is emerging as these investors increasingly turn to Liquid and Overnight funds, which have primarily served corporate treasuries for managing idle cash. A key factor driving this shift is the introduction of Instant Redemption, a feature allowing investors to swiftly access their funds. With this facility, individuals can request a withdrawal via a fund house app and have the money transferred to their bank accounts within minutes. This makes liquid funds, which currently offer returns between 6.5% and 7%, more attractive for managing emergency cash needs. Particularly favored by younger investors, Instant Redemption enables quick access to funds, especially during volatile market conditions when immediate liquidity is essential. For instance, on days when stock prices dip, investors can quickly withdraw from their debt funds to capitalize on lower equity prices. Despite its benefits, the adoption of Instant Redemption remains somewhat limited, as many third-party platforms have yet to integrate this feature, and daily withdrawal limits may deter high-net-worth individuals. Nevertheless, industry experts believe this trend could reshape how retail investors manage their cash and investment strategies in the future.
