Mumbai metro pillar collapse: Five arrested, MMRDA imposes ₹5 crore fine on contractor after 1 killed, 3 injured

In a tragic incident on the Mumbai Metro construction site, a pillar collapse led to the death of one individual and injuries to three others. The Maharashtra Metro Rail Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken swift action, arresting five individuals connected to the incident. Among those arrested are employees of the main contractor, a consortium of Reliance Infrastructure and Astaldi, along with subcontractor Milan Road Buildtech LLP. The MMRDA has also levied a substantial fine of ₹5 crore against the contractors for their negligence in safety protocols. This incident underscores ongoing concerns regarding construction safety standards in Mumbai, especially in light of the rapid urban infrastructure development in the city. Authorities have pledged a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and prevent future accidents, as the city continues to expand its metro network to ease congestion and improve public transport.
