PhonePe rolls out biometric UPI payments
PhonePe has launched a new biometric authentication feature for UPI payments, allowing users to authorize transactions of up to Rs 5,000 using fingerprint or facial recognition. This innovative approach eliminates the need to enter a UPI PIN for smaller transactions, enhancing both convenience and security for users. The feature is designed to streamline everyday transactions such as sending money, scanning QR codes, and making online purchases, particularly in situations where entering a PIN may be cumbersome. Although biometric authentication is available for transactions below the Rs 5,000 limit, users will still be required to input their UPI PIN for larger amounts. Should users encounter issues with biometric recognition, such as poor lighting, they can easily revert to the traditional PIN method. Currently, the feature is available for Android users but an iOS version is anticipated shortly. PhonePe aims to improve user experience while reducing the risk of transaction failures caused by incorrect PIN entries.
