PMAY-U 2.0 to Provide Housing for Young Adults: Minister Tokhan Sahu Informs Rajya Sabha

Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu informed the Rajya Sabha that Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0 includes special provisions to provide affordable housing for young adults in urban areas.

Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu informed the Rajya Sabha that the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) 2.0 includes special provisions aimed at providing affordable housing for young adults in urban areas across India. The announcement was made in response to a question raised in the Upper House of Parliament.

Key Highlights of PMAY-U 2.0

PMAY-U 2.0 is the continuation of the flagship housing scheme of the Government of India, which seeks to ensure that every urban household has access to a pucca house with all basic amenities. The scheme has been expanded under PMAY-U 2.0 to encompass a wider section of the population, including young adults who are starting their professional lives and looking for affordable housing in cities.

Focus on Young Adults

Recognising the challenges faced by young working professionals in urban India — particularly those migrating from smaller towns and villages — the government has included dedicated provisions within PMAY-U 2.0 to address their housing needs. Young adults, who often find it financially difficult to purchase or rent homes in expensive urban centres, are expected to benefit significantly from this focus.

Urban Housing Challenge

India's rapid urbanisation has created significant pressure on housing infrastructure in cities. As millions of young Indians move to urban areas for education and employment each year, the demand for affordable urban housing has grown manifold. PMAY-U 2.0 addresses this challenge through subsidised loans, direct benefit transfers, and partnerships with state governments and urban local bodies.

Government's Commitment

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to the goal of 'Housing for All', ensuring that access to dignified housing is not limited by economic status or age. The provisions under PMAY-U 2.0 for young adults are part of a broader effort to make urban living more inclusive, affordable, and aspirational for India's growing youth population.
