In a significant move ahead of the 2027 assembly elections, the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) has announced a reduction in electricity tariffs for domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers, effective from April 1, 2026. The new tariff order lowers rates by up to Rs 1.50 per unit for households and by up to 79 paise for commercial users, while industrial tariffs see a reduction of up to 74 paise per unit. This initiative aims to prioritize consumer interests while ensuring the financial stability of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), with an overall relief of Rs 7,851.91 crore for all consumer categories. Power Minister Sanjeev Arora emphasized the government's commitment to making electricity affordable, highlighting that over 90% of households already benefit from the state’s scheme providing 300 units of free electricity per month. Furthermore, reduced fixed charges for various consumer categories have been introduced, reinforcing the government's focus on economic growth and consumer welfare in the state. This proactive approach by the Punjab government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s leadership, is expected to foster industrial growth and enhance the quality of life for residents, as the state prepares for upcoming elections.
