India Approves Quantum Teaching Labs in 23 Institutions Under National Quantum Mission

The National Quantum Mission has approved setting up quantum teaching facilities and laboratories in 23 academic institutions across India, with 100 more institutions currently under consideration.
India's National Quantum Mission (NQM) has taken a major step forward with the approval of quantum teaching facilities and laboratories in 23 academic institutions across the country. The initiative aims to build a strong foundation for research and training in emerging quantum technologies, with an additional 100 institutions currently under consideration for the next phase of expansion.
Review Meeting Chaired by Dr. Jitendra Singh
The announcement was made at a monthly review meeting of science ministry secretaries chaired by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology. The meeting brought together senior officials from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), and the Ministry of Earth Sciences to review progress across key scientific programmes.
Significance for Quantum Research
The establishment of dedicated quantum teaching labs in universities and research institutions signals India's intent to build indigenous talent in quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum sensing. These facilities will support advanced research and provide hands-on training for the next generation of quantum scientists and engineers. The phased approach—starting with 23 institutions and scaling to over 100—reflects a systematic effort to democratise access to cutting-edge quantum infrastructure across Indian academia.
Broader Science and Technology Developments
The review meeting also covered several other major initiatives:
- The India International Science Festival 2026 will be held in Pune, with the Department of Biotechnology taking the lead on planning
- The 5th RISE Conclave, recently held in Chennai, showcased innovations from over 140 technology stalls representing CSIR, DST, DBT, and allied organisations
- National Technology Day (May 11–13, 2026) at Bharat Mandapam will feature over 500 technologies and engage more than 3,000 stakeholders
- Updates on upcoming PSLV missions and navigation satellite launches planned for May were also reviewed
The meeting underscored the government's focus on strengthening inter-ministerial coordination to accelerate India's scientific achievements and communicate them more effectively to the public.
