Scientists Trace Rare Cosmic Outburst to a Massive Planetary Collision Around Gaia20ehk

Astronomers have identified a significant cosmic event involving a collision between two planets around the star Gaia20ehk, located approximately 11,000 light-years away. This Sun-like star maintained a consistent light output until 2016, when it exhibited three minor dimming events, indicating potential disturbances. However, it was in 2021 that Gaia20ehk's light behavior dramatically changed, leading researchers to describe the light curve as having 'gone completely bonkers.' Subsequent infrared observations revealed a surge in heat that coincided with the dimming of visible light, suggesting the presence of a hot debris cloud generated by a colossal planetary impact. This discovery not only sheds light on the dynamic processes occurring in distant star systems but also enhances our understanding of planetary collisions and their effects on surrounding celestial bodies.
