'Seller Beware': Why CCPA Fined Snapdeal Rs 5 Lakh Over Non-BIS Toys

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on Snapdeal for selling toys that do not comply with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). According to CCPA regulations, toys that fail to meet mandatory BIS standards are classified as 'defective', which constitutes both misleading advertisement and unfair trade practices. This action reflects the authority's commitment to consumer safety and highlights the necessity for e-commerce platforms to ensure their products adhere to established safety standards. The CCPA's ruling serves as a warning to sellers about the consequences of non-compliance, emphasizing the importance of quality assurance in consumer goods. As the market for online retail continues to expand in India, adherence to safety regulations becomes increasingly critical to protect consumers and maintain fair trade practices.
