US torpedoed Iranian warship in Indian Ocean
In a significant military action, a US submarine sank the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean, as confirmed by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. This attack marks the first instance of a US submarine sinking an enemy vessel with a torpedo since World War II, illustrating America's strategic military capabilities amid ongoing tensions with Iran. The incident occurred in international waters, with Sri Lankan authorities reporting the rescue of 32 crew members while 148 remain missing. The frigate had issued a distress signal shortly before it sank, leading to a rapid response from Sri Lankan naval forces, which are currently conducting search operations in accordance with their maritime obligations. Sri Lanka, which has maintained a neutral stance amid the escalating conflict between the US and Iran, has emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving Middle Eastern tensions. The rescue operation has heightened security measures in Galle, where the wounded were treated. The Iranian Ambassador in Colombo has not yet commented on the situation, as the nation grapples with the implications of this military engagement in its waters.
