16,000 Vehicles Have Same Chassis, Engine Numbers In Northeast: CAG

A recent report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has revealed that approximately 16,000 vehicles in Northeast India share identical chassis and engine numbers. This alarming finding raises significant concerns about vehicle registration practices in the region, where each vehicle is supposed to have a unique registration number as mandated by law. The CAG's investigation highlights the potential for fraudulent registrations and misuse of vehicles, undermining the integrity of the transportation system. Legally, while individuals can re-register vehicles when relocating to a new state, this process requires the cancellation of the existing registration. The revelations from the CAG call for stricter enforcement of registration protocols to prevent further anomalies and to ensure accountability within the vehicle registration system. This issue not only affects the credibility of vehicle ownership but also poses challenges for law enforcement and road safety in the region.
