294 SDM or higher-level officers appointed Bengal returning officers

In a significant administrative shift, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) or higher-level officers as returning officers (ROs) for all 294 constituencies in West Bengal. This move aligns the state's electoral management with national standards, as previously, only 142 constituencies were overseen by officers at or above the SDM rank. The ECI emphasized that this change aims to enhance the integrity and efficiency of the electoral process in West Bengal, ensuring that all constituencies are managed by adequately qualified officials. The decision reflects a broader effort to standardize election administration across the country, thereby improving oversight and accountability during elections. This elevation in officer rank is expected to instill greater confidence among voters and political parties alike, as the state prepares for its upcoming electoral challenges.
