Assam SR aimed at including all eligible, excluding ineligible voters: CEC Kumar

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, Rajiv Kumar, has stated that the Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls in Assam is focused on including all eligible voters while ensuring ineligible individuals are excluded. This initiative is closely tied to the update of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which aims to clarify the citizenship status of residents in Assam. The final electoral rolls for Assam have recorded approximately 20.49 million voters, with only around 500 pleas for inclusion submitted during the revision process. This low number of applications suggests a significant level of awareness among the populace regarding their eligibility status. The CEC emphasized the importance of the SR in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process, reinforcing the Commission's commitment to upholding democratic principles in the state, which has faced challenges related to citizenship and voter registration in the past.
