Centre directs states to monitor LPG supply, prevent hoarding and black marketing

The Indian government has issued directives to state authorities to closely monitor the supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) amidst growing concerns over shortages. Home Secretary Govind Mohan emphasized the need for vigilant oversight to prevent hoarding and black marketing of LPG cylinders, a situation exacerbated by rising consumer demand and logistical challenges. The directive comes in response to reports highlighting difficulties faced by consumers in obtaining gas cylinders, particularly in urban areas. State governments and Director Generals of Police (DGPs) have been instructed to implement measures to ensure a steady supply and safeguard against illegal practices that could disrupt access for households. This initiative aims to maintain affordability and availability of LPG, which is crucial for cooking in millions of Indian homes. The government’s proactive stance seeks to address potential market imbalances and reassure citizens of the availability of essential resources, especially as festive seasons approach when demand is typically higher.
