EC begins publication of post-SIR voter rolls in Bengal, going district-wise: What we know so far

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has commenced the publication of post-Special Revision (SIR) voter rolls in West Bengal, progressing on a district-wise basis. This initiative follows the draft rolls released on December 16, which revealed a significant reduction in the number of registered voters. The electorate decreased from 7.66 crore to 7.08 crore, resulting in the removal of over 58 lakh names during the initial phase of the SIR. The ECI's decision to revise the rolls aims to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the voter list, a crucial step ahead of upcoming elections. This revision is particularly important in West Bengal, a state known for its vibrant electoral participation and historical political significance. By systematically updating the voter rolls, the ECI seeks to enhance the electoral process and facilitate a fair and transparent voting environment for all citizens. Stakeholders, including political parties and civil society groups, are keenly observing these developments as they prepare for the electoral challenges ahead, underscoring the importance of accurate voter representation in a democratic setup.
