Govt orders Telegram to disable over 3,000 piracy channels in 3 hours

The Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has directed the messaging platform Telegram to take swift action to disable more than 3,000 channels that are allegedly distributing pirated content. This decisive move comes in response to increasing concerns over copyright violations and the unauthorized sharing of copyrighted materials. The MIB specified that Telegram must complete the disabling of these channels within a tight timeframe of three hours. The government’s ongoing efforts to combat piracy reflect a broader initiative to protect intellectual property rights and safeguard the creative industries in India. Telegram has faced scrutiny in the past over its handling of copyright issues, and this latest order underscores the urgency with which the government expects platforms to act against piracy. The crackdown is part of a wider strategy to ensure compliance with Indian copyright laws and to provide a safer environment for content creators and consumers alike, as the digital landscape continues to evolve rapidly.
