Gujarat tops country with 1,560 forest land diversion approvals in 5 years

Gujarat has emerged as the leading state in India for forest land diversion approvals, receiving a total of 1,560 approvals over the past five years. This data highlights the state's significant development activities, which often require the conversion of forest land for industrial, infrastructural, and agricultural purposes. Following Gujarat, Haryana recorded 1,424 approvals, while Uttar Pradesh and Punjab secured 1,188 and 1,067 approvals, respectively. Madhya Pradesh, known for its vast forests, had 902 approvals. The trend of forest land diversion raises important environmental concerns, as it can lead to habitat loss and biodiversity decline. Critics argue that while development is necessary, it should not come at the expense of ecological balance. The Forest Conservation Act governs these approvals, which are intended to ensure that any diversion is justified and that compensatory afforestation measures are implemented. The rising number of approvals in these states reflects the ongoing tension between development and conservation as India strives to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability.
