Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib to Open for Pilgrimage Season in May 2026

The portals of Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand are set to open for the pilgrimage season in May 2026, welcoming devotees to one of the highest Sikh shrines in the world.

Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib, one of the holiest Sikh pilgrimage sites in India, is scheduled to open its portals for the annual pilgrimage season in May 2026. Situated at an altitude of over 4,300 metres in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, the shrine attracts thousands of devotees each year.

Opening of the Holy Shrine

The exact opening date is determined each year based on weather conditions and the melting of snow at the high-altitude location. Pilgrims from across the country and abroad look forward to the season opening as it marks the beginning of their spiritual journey to the sacred site.

Significance of Hemkund Sahib

Hemkund Sahib holds deep religious significance for the Sikh community. According to the Dasam Granth, Guru Gobind Singh meditated at this site in a previous life. The gurudwara is located beside a glacial lake and is surrounded by snow-covered Himalayan peaks, making it a place of breathtaking natural beauty as well as spiritual importance.

Pilgrimage Route

The trek to Hemkund Sahib passes through the famous Valley of Flowers National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pilgrims typically travel to Govindghat and then undertake a trek of approximately 19 kilometres to reach the shrine. The Uttarakhand government and local administration make arrangements for the safe passage of pilgrims during the season.
