India Exports First GI-Tagged Joha Rice Consignment From Assam To UK, Italy

In a significant step for India's agricultural exports, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has successfully facilitated the first shipment of Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Joha rice from Assam to international markets, specifically the United Kingdom and Italy. This consignment, weighing 25 metric tonnes, marks a milestone in promoting the unique quality of Assam's Joha rice, known for its distinct aroma and taste. The GI tag not only enhances the rice's marketability but also protects the traditional cultivation methods of the region, allowing farmers to gain recognition and fair prices for their premium product. The initiative underscores the Indian government's commitment to boosting agricultural exports and enhancing the global presence of regional specialties. With a growing demand for unique and authentic agricultural products worldwide, this export could pave the way for more GI-tagged items from India to reach international consumers, thereby benefiting local farmers and the economy in Assam.
