Kerala Excise Commissioner post should be filled with IAS officer: CAT

The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has ruled that the position of Excise Commissioner in Kerala should be filled exclusively by an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer. This decision came in response to a petition challenging the appointment of a non-IAS officer to the pivotal role. The tribunal emphasized the necessity of ensuring that key administrative positions within the state's excise department are held by officers with the requisite training and experience provided through the IAS. This ruling aligns with the broader objective of maintaining administrative efficiency and integrity within government operations. The Excise Commissioner plays a critical role in regulating the liquor trade in Kerala, a state known for its complex policies surrounding alcohol consumption. The decision is expected to prompt the Kerala government to reassess its current appointments and potentially lead to the restructuring of the excise department to comply with the tribunal’s directive. This move is seen as an effort to enhance governance and uphold the standards expected from high-ranking officials in the state's administration.
