Opinion: Opinion | Why Social Media Platforms Must Share The Wealth Others Create For Them

In India, the digital creator economy is burgeoning, with approximately 2 to 2.5 million active creators contributing significantly to the online landscape. However, a mere 8-10% of these creators are able to effectively monetize their content, raising concerns about the sustainability of their efforts. Social media platforms, which benefit immensely from the content produced by these creators, are urged to implement fair revenue-sharing models. This call for action highlights the disparity in wealth distribution within the digital ecosystem, where platforms profit from user-generated content while creators struggle to earn a living. As the digital economy expands, it becomes increasingly essential for social media companies to recognize their responsibility in supporting creators, ensuring that they receive a fair share of the income generated from their work. Addressing these issues could lead to a more equitable digital environment and enhance the overall growth of the creator economy in India.
