Overseas scholarship slots for SCs to double to 250 from 2026–27; panel flags funding crunch

The Indian government has announced plans to double the number of overseas scholarship slots for Scheduled Caste (SC) students to 250 starting from the academic year 2026–27. Additionally, there will be an increase in the scholarship quota for Scheduled Tribes (ST) students. This initiative aims to enhance educational opportunities for underprivileged communities and promote their representation in global academic platforms. However, a panel has raised concerns regarding the adequacy of funding and the effective utilization of these scholarships. With the focus on improving access to higher education for SC and ST students, the government is being urged to ensure that the necessary financial resources are allocated to support this significant expansion. The move is seen as part of a broader strategy to uplift marginalized sections of society through education, which is critical in bridging the socio-economic gap in India. The government’s commitment to increasing these slots reflects its recognition of the importance of higher education in empowering disadvantaged groups, although the success of the initiative will depend largely on addressing the highlighted financial constraints and ensuring that eligible students are well-informed about the opportunities available to them.
