Rajasthan To Drop 2-Child Norm, But Only For Candidates In Local Bodies Polls

The Rajasthan government has officially abolished the two-child policy that previously restricted candidates from contesting in local body elections. This regulation, which was enacted in 1995 under the Bhairon Singh Shekhawat administration as a measure to curb population growth, will no longer apply to individuals seeking election to panchayats and municipal bodies. The decision marks a significant shift in electoral norms, reflecting the government's intention to encourage wider participation in local governance. While the two-child norm aimed to promote family planning, it has faced criticism for limiting the political aspirations of many individuals, particularly those from larger families. By removing this restriction, the Rajasthan government is expected to enhance democratic representation and inclusivity within local bodies, potentially leading to a more diverse array of candidates. This change signals a progressive step towards reforming electoral policies in the state, aligning with broader national conversations about family planning and representation in governance.
