SC pulls up states over delay in naming DGPs

The Supreme Court of India has taken a stern stance against six states for their failure to comply with a prior ruling regarding the appointment of Directors General of Police (DGPs). During a recent hearing, the court expressed dissatisfaction with the delays in naming DGPs and highlighted that this non-compliance could lead to contempt proceedings against the states involved. The court's directive, which mandated that the states consult the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for these appointments, was aimed at ensuring a more transparent and merit-based selection process. The states critiqued include those that have not yet responded to the UPSC, raising concerns about governance and law enforcement effectiveness. The Supreme Court's intervention underscores the importance of adhering to legal frameworks designed to uphold the integrity of police appointments, thereby reinforcing accountability within state administrations. As public safety and law enforcement remain critical issues, the court's firm stance is a reminder for state governments to prioritize compliance with judicial directives to enhance the efficacy of police leadership across the country.
