Shiv Sena MP seeks ban on social media for kids, Centre hints no such plans

Milind Deora, a Member of Parliament from the Shiv Sena party, called on the Indian government to consider implementing a ban on social media for children during a parliamentary session on Tuesday. His appeal was informed by international trends, where various countries have taken steps to restrict children's access to social media platforms due to concerns over mental health and safety. However, the Indian government has indicated that there are currently no plans to enforce such a ban. This discussion comes amid growing concerns regarding the impact of social media on young users, particularly in light of rising instances of cyberbullying and mental health issues linked to excessive screen time. While some countries have successfully instituted age restrictions and usage regulations on social platforms, the Indian authorities seem to be leaning towards enhancing existing regulations rather than imposing outright bans. The debate reflects a broader global conversation about the responsibilities of social media companies and the need for protective measures for vulnerable populations, especially children.
