Supreme Court takes note of illegal sand mining at Chambal’s protected area

The Supreme Court of India has acknowledged the ongoing illegal sand mining activities occurring in the protected areas along the Chambal River. This issue, which poses a significant threat to the region's ecological balance and biodiversity, has drawn the attention of the judiciary. The court has directed that the case be referred to Chief Justice Surya Kant, who will determine the appropriate bench to address the matter. Illegal sand mining not only disrupts local ecosystems but also jeopardizes the livelihoods of communities dependent on the river. The Chambal River, known for its rich wildlife, including the critically endangered gharial, faces severe threats from such activities. The Supreme Court's intervention highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of environmental laws and regulations to safeguard vulnerable habitats in India. This case underscores the broader challenges of environmental protection amidst rising illegal mining activities across the country.
